A long, long time ago,
I can still remember when those golfers used to practice here.
And they thought things would never change
They'd always have their driving range,
Where they could practice golfing skills all year.

But then the zoning board decreed
High density is what we need,
Bad news from the school board
They answered with just one word.     [NO!]

I still remember when it closed,
The driving range was soon bulldozed.
The concrete poured, the bigwigs posed,
The day the Jaguars rose!

And we were singin' ...
My, my, this here Coral Glades High,
We're the latest and the greatest and our standards are high,
We're gonna show them just how high we can fly,
We'll be winners 'till the day that we die,
Winners 'till the day that we die.

We started up our Jaguar team
When building 4 was just a dream,
They said some things were very near.
The auditorium we knew
Would be here in a year or two,
And we could have our plays and concerts here.

With DECA, HOSA, NHS,
Mu Alpha Theta, and the rest.
JAG was on the air
Debate and Prowl were there!

And the Jaguars tried to take the field,
But City Hall refused to yield,
Do you recall if they appealed?
The day the Jaguars rose.

Now for ten years we've been goin' strong
And we're still here, though Wilma's gone
But that's not all that came to be
When the chorus sang by "Candlelight"
And brightened Disney's Christmas night
And our cheering squad "Fired Up" on MTV.

Then Harry Potter spent the night
And "Journey's End" was quite a fight
With FCATS nearly gone
Common Core was comin' on!

And the three who lead us toward the truth
Jones, Ramirez, and Carruth,
They were the leaders in our youth
The day the Jaguars rose.

A parody of "Americn Pie" written and first performed by Don McLean. Words go with "ProSource Karaoke "American Pie (45 version) in the Style of Don McLean[Karaoke Version] - Single

  1. Driving Range: Yes, Coral Glades HS is built on an old city golf driving range. In the early 2000s the Coral Springs Zoning Board decided to dramatically increase the zoning density along Royal Palm Boulevard and other areas in western Coral Springs. Several years later they were shocked, SHOCKED! to find that the local High Schools were suddenly overcrowded. The school board suggested double-shifting classes at other local high schools (J. P. Taravella and Stoneman Douglas) as a remedy. The city of Coral Springs countered that Broward County Schools should condemn homes and construct a new High School on the property so obtained to relieve the overcrowding created by the previous zoning decision. The Broward Schools declined to take on the expense of dealing with Coral Springs' shortsighted zoning decisions. At that point, the city decided to provide the city driving range as the site for a new High School, if Broward County Schools would be responsible for the construction. The new high school, tentatively named "JJJ" eventually received the name "Coral Glades", suggesting its location in Coral Springs just across the Sawgrass Expressway from the Everglades.

  2. Building 4 otherwise (and incorrectly) known as the "Freshman Building" is a 3-story classroom building opened 2 years after the rest of the school. The school did not need this originally as it opened with no Senior class.

  3. The Auditorium was a building supposed to be constructed immediately after building 4 which would give space for the fine arts and also ROTC. Sadly, this never happened, leaving Coral Glades as the only high school in Broward County with no auditorium.

  4. DECA. A group that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

  5. HOSA. Health Occupations Student Association.

  6. NHS. National Honor Society.

  7. Mu Alpha Theta or ΜΑΘ. The US honor society for Mathematics.

  8. JAG was on the air. Our in-school announcements and broadcasts are usually informally referred to as "WJAG". I used "JAG" instead to get the meter to match in the song. Everybody knows this is a reference to WJAG.

  9. Prowl. The name for our multiple award-winning student newspaper.

  10. "The Jaguars tried to take the field." Next to the golf range was a community park. The city of Coral Springs allowed Coral Glades to use the field, but insisted on building a fence with locked gates between the field and the school. Because the park is public, some community uses have higher priority and the school sometimes gets the short end of the stick. And no, they didn't appeal. Coral Glades is the only high school in Broward without complete access to its own athletic field.

  11. Wilma. The most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It passed over Coral Springs on October 24th of 2005. There was a lot of damage in the area but the experience reinforced the belief that Coral Glades HS is built like a fortress. Other than the visitors' football stands becoming airborne and striking the gym building about 20 feet above ground level there was little damage. And that damage was to the stands. The gym building repair consisted almost entirely of spackling and painting.

  12. Candlelight. The story of Christmas at Disney World in Orlando. Our Chorus has been invited and has performed every year from the time the school opened.

  13. Fired UpThe Coral Glades Cheerleaders won MTV's nationwide 2009 "Fired Up" Cheerleading Challenge.

  14. Harry Potter Spent the Night. The Coral Glades Drama Department came up with a periodic fundraiser timed to the release of a number of the Harry Potter movies. This included assigning attendees to dorms using the "Sorting Hat", and some magical events, including pyrotechnics provided by our Potions (Chemistry) teachers Ms. Wagner and Ms. Kessler. I played Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.

  15. Journey's End. One of our Drama Department's big achievements was a production of "Journey's End", a tragic play about WW1 Trench Warfare.

  16. The FCAT is the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test, required by the Federal "No Child Left Behind" legislation to assess student achievement.

  17. Common Core is the multi-state effort to define precisely what students should have learned each year in school.

  18. Jones, Ramirez, and Carruth. Up to the writing of this parody Coral Glades has had 3 principals: David K. Jones, Michael Ramirez, and Steven Carruth.

It is very discouraging to see one's own poetry reproduced somewhere and labeled as "Author Unknown". Inevitably, that is what happens when people copy poems and redistribute them. Eventually the attribution to the author and the copyright notice is lost.

My only reward for writing this is the 15 milliseconds of fame I receive from having my name here. Don't deprive me of that.
